In Portugal, for several years, there was only one cable TV provider. This provider had the monopoly of cable TV but, recently, a new company was developed to compete with it.
This new provider is very similar to Direct TV Service. For those readers who never heard about this company, I´ll briefly explain what it is. DirecTV is a direct broadcast satellite service, launched in 1994, which is less expensive than cable. This provider transmits digital satellite television in the United States, the Caribbean, and parts of Latin America. Besides being less expensive than cable, Direct TV System has several advantages, for example, it doesn´t fail when lines are down, provides digital quality and high definition TV.
A major difference between US and Portuguese services is Direct TV has its own network which is available only to it´s subscribers in the United States. I´ve read in some websites that this company is also the leader in sports programming.
The new Portuguese provider is now gaining more subscribers because they´re offering free installation and equipment. I´ve been seriously thinking about subscribing a package that includes TV, phone and unlimited Internet connection but I can only do it after I finish my actual contract.
