Christmas Shopping: Forum Algarve

Forum Algarve is Faro´s biggest mall and we live very close to it. I can see it from my bedroom window. We go there often because it also has Jumbo hypermarket, the biggest supermarket in town.
The mall looks more beautiful at night with all the lights on and Christmas decorations. They also make the biggest Christmas tree in town. Early this month, we went there for dinner and I took the pictures above.
Tonight, me and my daughter are going out for our Christmas shopping.
See you :)

Camping and RV

As some of you know, I don´t travel outside my country as much I´d like to but nevertheless I´m a big Travel & RV fan. I often blog about my mini traveling adventures and desires both here and in my other blogs.
I´ll never forget my camping experiences, specially those back when I was a teenager. During summer vacations, I used to camp for weeks in Tróia, Setúbal. In August, my hometown’s older Fisherman celebrate a holiday devoted to their protection saint. Boats are decorated for a parade in Sado river. People get together in the beach, some camp others just come for the festivities.
I used to spend the festivities camping in a small tent nearby my best friend´s parents bigger tents.
I really miss camping. I miss the nights by the fireplace, having fun and listening to that friend that brings the guitar to cheer the party, sleeping outside because it´s too hot inside the tent. Being there under the summer night sky, watching the stars to fall asleep in our sleeping bags. Washing plates with sand, looking for seafood and cooking clamps in the fireplace. These are some of the fun parts I miss, won´t describe the less fun parts... mosquito here, ant there :)
My father had a small van which he transformed in a single person RV. Someone with a bit of skill can do that, there are specialized RV and camping shops which provide anything needed to refurbish or revamp an older RV. The link above is from one of these stores.
When my father passed away I inherited the Renault RV but sold it a few months after because I had no place to keep it, it was too small for 3 persons and didn´t know if I would ever use it. I sold it to an English couple living in "Monchique". I like to think that surely are having more fun with it.
Maybe someday I can embark in some RV adventure. For now, all I can do is read about other´s RV adventures, which I often do.
See you soon.

Birthday Gifts

In April, I celebrated my birthday in a simple way. It was a working day and I was attending a course at the hospital. I was so busy that I didn´t have time to prepare or buy a birthday cake. Me and my daughter had dinner out, took a walk in Faro´s Marina and came home early because, in the next day, we had to wake up early.
The picture above shows what I got as birthday presents, except one item. It seems my closest ones remembered it was my birthday. I received a perfume box from my daughter and S. and a small make up bag from friends. I replaced my 6 years old broken Sumsung cellphone by a new LG with the help of TMN point system and my pocket.
The only item in the picture that isn´t new, but should be, are my sunglasses. After buying new eye glasses, I now need new to buy new sunglasses. My 4 years old sunglasses are broken and it´s lens have many scratches. New glasses would be a gift from me to myself. When I´m driving, sunglasses are an indispensable item for my sensible eyes, specially with our hot Summer sun.
I´ve been checking glasses prices online and found that know brands are very expensive for what I´m willing to spend. A new pair of glasses from known brands can cost a few hundred euros and I´m not willing to spend that much. I have to look better in different shops to find a deal that suits my wallet, meanwhile I´ll still be wearing the old ones.

Shopping... Wisely

Shopping is something I enjoy doing. Like it or not, everyone shops. I like to describe myself as a kind of shopaholic in recovery, you can follow my story in my PF blog. I have changed the habit of buying stuff I don´t really need. Before buying something I ask myself if I truly need/want that item.
I´m working towards a balance between shopaholic and frugal but I still enjoy the act of shopping in itself, even groceries. Since I started saving money to achieve defined personal goals, tracking expenses and budgeting became a challenge. After doing realistic math, I slowly started changing my shopping behavior. Now that my personal finances are in control I got used to saving habits. For example, I save resources, do lists, shop wisely and always look for discount vouchers, coupons and promotions. This link is only for UK.
In my country, coupons are now more common. I have a few fidelity cards which give me rewards such as discounts and 10% off coupons. I often do price comparison and I got used to, before shopping, always research online. I already found good deals trough the Internet.
Printable coupons and discounts can do wonders to a budget, specially if you live in US. I´ve been following a blog about a family of four that spends only 800$00 for the whole year in groceries and I´m amazed not only with US prices, but also with the opportunities people have there to save money. My country is one of the poorest in south Europe. We have low wages, comparing to other European countries, and prices are higher in most items, except housing. We have one of the most expensive gas price in Europe and we pay too many taxes. In fact, we pay tax for almost everything and that´s one of the reasons it´s more difficult to save money while living in Portugal.

Back to Work

As my post tittle says, I´m back to work and to my crazy shift´s schedules. This short vacations should have been longer. As usual, I didn´t do all the things I wanted to.
At night, when I return home, I have all my online tasks to do. Most nights, I´m so tired that I need to use my old and not so fashion eye glasses to work in my notebook. You would surely laugh if you could see me with this glasses, they are so old that I look like a primary teacher from the 80´s.
You see, I have sensitive green eyes. Even during the day, I have to wear sunglasses most of the time because if I don´t, I get headaches and seems like I can´t stop crying. Talking about sunglasses, I could use a new pair. I´ve been using the same sunglasses for over three years now and besides being low quality, they already have a few scratches on them. Once I have astigmatism, the best solution for me would be a combination of vision and sun glasses but they are quite expensive so I always delay this purchase. I´d better look on online shops to check if I can find a better deal. A bigger notebook screen would also be very handy.
Today, I woke up very early and worked a night shift. I´m already too tired to make drops and finish my online chores. Tomorrow, I´ll have a day off. After taking my daughter to school I´ll be back home to do some cleaning and then I´ll be back to blogging. I have so much to do and so little time. It sounds strange, but I´m always mourning about my lack of time. It´s life!

Going Out at Night Again

Next weekend, I will have two days off in a row. The whole weekend off is a rarity for me so I have to make the most out of it.
I feel like going out again. Once my daughter will be spending the weekend with her father, I´ll be on my own.
I already made some plans. I will probably indulge myself with a good meal in one of my favorite restaurants and after I´ll go to a bar for a drink or two. I don´t drink on a daily basis but I enjoy a good wine and a couple beers when I go out.
Now, the only thing I need is to find out what to wear. My options are few and most of my clothes are casual, nothing special. I wear jeans on a daily basis because it´s practical and I feel comfortable. Anyway, jeans are appropriated to go out at night. All I need is a fashion blouse to combine with jeans and I´ll be Ok. If I go out with my sports sweaters, I´ll probably look like I´m wearing large mens clothing. I need to buy something feminine but inexpensive. I´ve been checking some online stores and I think I found exactly what I´m looking for. Maybe I can find a similar model in mall shops. Gotta check it out. Night, here I go :)

Comfort: A Good Investment

The word "saving" is always in the back of my mind but the truth is I´m a shopaholic in recovery. I still love luxury items but every day I make an effort to be more frugal. Having a frugal lifestyle doesn´t happen from day to night. I have many spending temptations, huge ones, but I try to control them the best I can. Currently, my biggest temptations are comfort items and home improvement projects. I keep rationalizing and making excuses for this spending impulses. For example, I tell myself that comfort items are good investments and once I work hard I deserve them. The fact is we only live once and if we can afford it why not buying, right?
The best way to avoid spending money is locking myself at home because when I go shopping I start having ideas. For example, last Saturday, I went to Faro´s annual fair with my daughter. After a few rides in the carousels, we decided to look around tents. My favorite tents were the ones selling mattresses and massage chairs. I´m planning buying a new mattress but if If I could afford a massage chairs, I would pick Human Touch.
Human Touch® chairs are human-like massage that replicates the rolling, kneading, compression and percussion techniques of massage professionals. Their chairs have multiple automatic programs that allow us to customize massage area, intensity and techniques used. Human Touch chairs provide full-body massage that follows the contours of our spine and body from neck to foot. With this type of technology we´re in control of the massage experience. Plus, recent chairs are very beautiful, leather ones are my favorite.
Just imagine arriving home from a tiring day at work and having a private message professional at our service. A new good quality mattress and a massage chair are on top of my "want" list.

Shopping Spree

Hi everyone.
Thursday was my day off from work (it´s half past midnight here) and once I recently received my first check I decided to do some shopping in Forum Algarve.
Two years ago, I decided to have a frugal lifestyle to save money but there are a few essential items that I just can´t skip, such as clothes and shoes.
It´s been ages since I last bought something for me and for my birthday I promissed to offer myself a face cream so tonight I went out with my daughter and did the shopping I was avoiding.
For me I bought some lingerie, two pair of sandals, cotton socks, one shirt, a day cream and one book. For my daughter I bought a pair of shorts, one shirt, a cap and a pair of sandals.
I feel a bit guilty because I spent over one hundred fifty euros but I just can´t avoid buying clothes for my daughter because she´s growing a lot. The extra spending was a book about Karmic Astrology that I really wanted.
This month, I won´t buy anything else but food and essentials but next month I need to buy some more clothes for my daughter and a new swimming suit. Summer will arrive here soon and I will need to buy her more shorts, t-shirts, sandals and a summer jacket.
We also had a burger dinner and one ice cream. I love going out with my daughter because we have fun even when we don´t buy anything. Tonight it was kind of "shop until you drop" :)
See you soon.

I Need a New Cell Phone

I have a 3G Samsung cell phone since March 2005. When I bought this phone it was one of the best products in the store. It cost me around three hundred Euros, which I paid in one year.
This Samsung has the best technology in the market. It includes a camera that captures photos and small videos, Internet connection and everything else a normal cell phone has.
Four years passed and only now I started having problems with this cell phone. The battery is going crazy and when I talk for more than five minutes the phone gets too hot, which is strange and frightening. I´m not sure if cell phone radiation is safe or what it causes in our brain. I need to read more research about this topic.
I´m considering buying a new cell phone but I´m not sure which brand to choose. One thing I´m sure, I will buy a cheaper phone with less technology. Maybe a cheaper phone will last more than a top line like I have.
Which is your favorite cell phone brand, and why?

Brainstorming For Christmas Gifts

Christmas is arriving here in Portugal. On Saturday, I went in Jumbo and the shopping mall is already decorated, anticipating the season.
For me Christmas is a time of he year to spend in family and it´s when kids have most fun, my daughter loves this season. She loves presents and firmly states that Christmas is her favorite time of the year because family gets together and
she gets lots of attention and nice things.
I have to start thinking about gifts because my hubby has a big family. We normally offer something to the kids and our mothers, the rest of the family is happy with some chocolates, drinks or a homemade cake. Although I have to buy gifts I´m trying to save money so I have to come up with some ideas.
It will all depend on how much we earn next month, so for now I´m only brainstorming before the shopping rush arrives.
And you, are you making plans for Christmas or is it too soon?
